ASCII Calculator: Text to ASCII Codes and Back

Turn text into ASCII codes in decimal, hex, octal or binary, or turn a list of codes back into text, with a code table for every character.

Last updated: October 18, 2026How this is calculated →

An ASCII calculator turns each character of your text into its ASCII code, a number from 0 to 127, and back again. Type Hi! and you get 72 105 33 in decimal, or 48 69 21 in hex. Choose decimal, hex, octal or binary, and paste a list of codes to read it as text. Characters outside ASCII, such as accented letters, are listed rather than converted.

This calculator converts between text and ASCII codes in your browser for general development and learning use. ASCII is a public table, not encryption: anyone who sees 72 105 33 can read it as Hi! in seconds. Check which base and separators your own system expects before you paste the output in.

About the ASCII Calculator

ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, gives 128 characters a number each, from 0 to 127. This calculator follows the code table in RFC 20 from 1969, which reproduces the USA standard X3.4-1968. The table has eight columns of sixteen rows, and a character's code is its column times 16 plus its row: capital A sits in column 4, row 1, so it is 65, and lowercase a is 97, exactly 32 higher. Codes 0 to 31 are control characters with no printed shape, such as 9 for a tab, 10 for a line feed and 13 for a carriage return, and 127 (DEL) is one RFC 20 does not strictly call a control character. When you decode tab, line feed or carriage return the page writes the character itself; for the others it shows the RFC 20 abbreviation in brackets, like [BEL] for 7. ASCII uses 7 bits, carried in an 8-bit byte whose top bit is 0, which is why binary output always starts with 0. An accented letter or an emoji has no ASCII code, so it is skipped and listed with its Unicode number instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ASCII code for a space, and for the digits?+

A space is 32. The digits 0 to 9 are 48 to 57, so subtracting 48 from a digit's code gives its value. Capital letters run from 65 (A) to 90 (Z) and lowercase from 97 (a) to 122 (z).

Why is lowercase exactly 32 more than uppercase?+

Capitals sit in columns 4 and 5 of the table and small letters in columns 6 and 7, at the same rows. Moving two columns adds 2 times 16, which is 32, so switching a letter between cases flips one bit in binary.

Why are my accented letters or emoji missing from the codes?+

ASCII stops at 127, so é, ñ or an emoji has no ASCII code. They are skipped and listed under the result with their Unicode number, such as U+00E9 for é. Their bytes in UTF-8, the encoding most of the web uses, are a different calculation, which the hex converter on this site shows.

Is ASCII the same as Unicode?+

Unicode includes ASCII as its first 128 characters, so the codes 0 to 127 mean the same thing in both. Unicode then goes on to more than a million possible code points for every other script and symbol.
