Long Division Calculator
Divide whole numbers the long way with every step shown: divide, multiply, subtract and bring down, then the quotient, the remainder and the exact decimal.
Long division splits a big division into small ones, one digit at a time. For 8,379 ÷ 24, 24 goes into 83 three times (3 × 24 = 72, 83 − 72 = 11); bring down the 7 to make 117, which takes 4 (117 − 96 = 21); bring down the 9 to make 219, which takes 9 (219 − 216 = 3). The answer is 349 R 3, and continuing past the point gives 349.125.
This calculator divides whole numbers only, a number of up to 30 digits by a divisor of up to 15 digits. Digits past the decimal point in the steps are cut off, not rounded, and the exact decimal shows at most 60 digits after the point.
Whole numbers only: a dividend of up to 30 digits and a divisor of 1 or more, up to 15 digits.
8,379 ÷ 24
349 R 3
- To 2 decimal places (cut off)
- 349.12
- Exact decimal
- 349.125
Steps
- 83 ÷ 24 = 3, 3 × 24 = 72, 83 − 72 = 11
- bring down: 117 ÷ 24 = 4, 4 × 24 = 96, 117 − 96 = 21
- bring down: 219 ÷ 24 = 9, 9 × 24 = 216, 219 − 216 = 3
- bring down 0: 30 ÷ 24 = 1, 1 × 24 = 24, 30 − 24 = 6
- bring down 0: 60 ÷ 24 = 2, 2 × 24 = 48, 60 − 48 = 12

About the Long Division Calculator
Each step repeats the same four moves. Divide the current number by the divisor and write down how many whole times it fits, multiply that digit by the divisor, subtract to get what is left, and bring down the next digit of the number you are dividing next to the leftover. Work starts at the first group of digits that is at least as large as the divisor, which is why 8,379 ÷ 24 begins with 83 rather than 8. When a group is still too small after a bring-down, the quotient gets a 0 in that place: in 1,260 ÷ 12, the 6 brought down is less than 12, so 105 has a zero in the middle. After the last digit, whatever is left is the remainder, always smaller than the divisor, and the check is quotient × divisor + remainder = the starting number, here 349 × 24 + 3 = 8,379. To keep going past the decimal point, bring down zeros; the Steps past the decimal point menu goes up to 10 and stops early if the division comes out even. Those digits are cut off rather than rounded. The exact decimal underneath shows a repeating part in parentheses, so 22 ÷ 7 is 3.(142857).
Frequently asked questions
How do I write the remainder?+
Write it after the quotient with an R, as in 349 R 3 for 8,379 ÷ 24. You can also write it as a fraction of the divisor, 349 and 3/24, or carry on dividing to get the decimal 349.125.
Why is there a zero in my answer?+
A zero appears whenever a bring-down still leaves a number smaller than the divisor. In 1,260 ÷ 12, the first step uses 12, then the 6 brought down is too small for 12, so the quotient digit is 0, and the 0 brought down after it makes 60, which takes 5. The answer is 105.
How do I continue long division into decimals?+
Put a decimal point after the quotient, add a zero to the remainder and divide again; by hand you can go as far as you need, and the calculator goes up to 10 places. For 22 ÷ 7 with ten steps past the point, the digits are 3.1428571428, and the pattern 142857 keeps repeating forever.
Can it divide decimals or negative numbers?+
It works with whole numbers. To divide decimals by hand, move the decimal point in both numbers the same number of places until the divisor is whole, then divide as usual. For a negative number, divide the sizes and give the answer a minus sign if exactly one of the two was negative.
