Acreage Calculator

Work out how many acres or hectares a piece of land is, from its measurements in feet, yards, miles, meters, chains or rods.

Last updated: November 4, 2026How this is calculated →

To find acreage, multiply the length by the width in feet and divide by 43,560, the square feet in one acre. A plot 660 ft long and 330 ft wide is 217,800 sq ft, or exactly 5 acres, which is 2.023 hectares. For land measured in meters, 100 m by 100 m is 1 hectare, or 2.471 acres.

This calculator is for estimates and is not a substitute for a licensed land survey. It handles rectangles, triangles and circles measured on flat ground, and it does not correct for slope or irregular boundaries.

About the Acreage Calculator

An acre is a unit of land area: 43,560 square feet, which is the same as 10 square chains or 160 square rods. The old definition is a strip one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide. Since January 1, 2023, the foot NIST treats as standard is the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m, which makes an acre exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters; the older U.S. survey acre, still found in legacy records, is larger by about 4 parts per million. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, about 2.471 acres, and a square mile is 640 acres. To find the acreage of a plot, measure it in any of these units, choose its shape, and the calculator converts it. A triangle uses half the base times the height, so a corner lot with a 400 ft base and a 300 ft height is 1.377 acres. A round field 1,000 ft across is 18.03 acres.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?+

43,560. An acre does not have to be square, but if it were, each side would be about 208.7 ft long.

How do I convert hectares to acres?+

Multiply by 2.471. One hectare is 10,000 square meters, a square 100 m on each side, and one acre is about 4,047 square meters, so a hectare is about 2.471 acres and an acre is about 0.4047 hectares.

What are chains and rods?+

Old surveying units still found on deeds and plat maps in the United States. A chain is 66 ft and a rod is 16.5 ft, so 10 chains by 1 chain, or 40 rods by 4 rods, is exactly 1 acre.

What if my land is an irregular shape?+

Split it into rectangles and triangles, work out each piece, and add the acres together. For a boundary or a sale, the figure on a licensed survey or the deed is the one that counts.

The acre as 43,560 square feet, 10 square chains or 160 square rods, 4,046.8564224 square meters with the international foot of 0.3048 m, 640 acres to the square mile, and the advice to avoid the U.S. survey foot after 2022 except for historic and legacy uses: NIST, Revised Unit Conversion Factors.
