Running Pace Calculator: Pace, Time and Distance

Enter any two of distance, time and pace to get the third, in minutes per kilometer and per mile, with even-pace finishing times for the 5K, 10K, half and full marathon.

Last updated: September 30, 2026How this is calculated →

Pace is your time divided by the distance. A 5 km run in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per kilometer, which is 8:03 per mile because a mile is 1.609344 km. Held for the whole race, that pace finishes a 10K in 50:00, a half marathon in 1:45:29 and a marathon in 3:30:59.

This calculator does arithmetic on the distance, time and pace you enter, for general training use only. It is not medical advice and not a substitute for a doctor or coach, and its race times assume an even pace that most runners cannot hold over longer distances. Build up distance gradually, and check with a doctor before starting a new running program, especially if you have a heart condition, an injury or other health concerns.

About the Running Pace Calculator

Pace and speed are the same measurement turned upside down. Speed says how far you go in an hour, pace says how long each kilometer or mile takes, and runners use pace because it maps straight onto a watch. To get it, divide the total time by the distance: 25 minutes over 5 km is 5 minutes per kilometer. To switch units, multiply a per-kilometer pace by 1.609344, the exact length of a mile in kilometers, so 5:00 per km becomes a little over 8:02 per mile, which rounds to 8:03. Going the other way, a finishing time is pace multiplied by distance, and distance is time divided by pace. The race table at the bottom holds your pace constant across the 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.0975 km) and marathon (42.195 km). Real races rarely work that way: most runners slow as the distance grows, so treat the marathon line as the time your current pace would give if you could hold it, not a prediction. The calculator rounds paces and times to the nearest second at the end, not step by step, so a converted pace can differ by a second from one worked out by hand in rounded pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?+

Divide your time by your distance. A 10 km run in 55 minutes is five and a half minutes per km, which is 5:30 per km, because half a minute is 30 seconds. Enter the time as hours, minutes and seconds and the calculator does the division and the conversion to seconds for you.

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?+

Choose Find my time, enter 42.195 km and try paces until the time drops under 4:00:00. A pace of 5:41 per kilometer, about 9:09 per mile, finishes in just under four hours if you hold it all the way, so most runners aim a few seconds faster to leave room for water stops and a slower final stretch.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?+

Multiply by 1.609344. Five minutes per kilometer is 300 seconds, times 1.609344 is about 483 seconds, or 8:03 per mile. To go from miles to kilometers, divide by the same number.

Is pace the same as speed?+

They carry the same information in opposite forms. Speed is distance per hour, so 12 km/h; pace is time per unit of distance, so 5:00 per km. The calculator shows both, in kilometers and miles.
