Steps to Miles Calculator
Turn a step count into miles and kilometers, or a distance into steps, using your own step length typed in or measured on a short walk.
Multiply your steps by your step length to get the distance, then divide by 5,280 feet to get miles. With a step of 2 ft 6 in, which is 2.5 feet, 10,000 steps cover 25,000 feet, about 4.73 miles or 7.62 kilometers, and one mile takes 5,280 / 2.5 = 2,112 steps. Your own step length changes the answer, so measure it if you can.
This calculator does arithmetic on the steps and step length you enter, for general fitness use only. It is not medical advice and not a substitute for a doctor or coach, and step counters and step lengths both vary, so treat the distance as an estimate. Talk to your doctor before starting a new walking or exercise program, especially if you have a heart condition, an injury or other health concerns.
A step is heel to heel, one foot to the other. 2 ft 6 in is only a starting value; your own length depends on your pace and the ground, so measuring gives a better answer. When both measure fields are filled they replace the step length above.

About the Steps to Miles Calculator
A step here runs from where one foot lands to where the other foot lands, heel to heel. Some trackers and charts count a stride as two steps, the full cycle back to the same foot, so check which one before you copy a number in. The calculator multiplies your step count by your step length to get feet, divides by 5,280 for miles, and multiplies feet by 0.3048 for meters, the exact definition of the foot. Going the other way, it divides the distance in feet by your step length. To measure your step, walk a distance you know at your normal pace, such as 50 feet marked on a driveway or a hallway, count the steps, and divide the distance by the count. Pace and terrain change step length, so measure the kind of walking you plan to convert. The 2 ft 6 in shown at first is only a starting value, not a figure for any particular height.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?+
Divide 5,280 feet by your step length in feet. At 2.5 feet a step, that is 5,280 / 2.5 = 2,112 steps. A shorter step means more steps per mile, so the answer is personal rather than one fixed number.
How do I measure my step length?+
Mark out a known distance, walk it at your usual pace and count the steps. Covering 50 feet in 20 steps means a step of 50 / 20 = 2.5 feet, which is 2 ft 6 in. Type the distance and the count into the measure fields and the calculator works out the step length for you.
How many steps is 3 miles?+
Multiply 3 by 5,280 to get 15,840 feet, then divide by your step length. At 2.5 feet that is 15,840 / 2.5 = 6,336 steps. Choose Miles to steps in the Convert menu to try your own distance and step length.
Is 10,000 steps 5 miles?+
Only if your step is about 2.64 feet, since 5 miles is 26,400 feet and 26,400 / 10,000 = 2.64. At a 2.5 foot step, 10,000 steps come to about 4.73 miles. A longer step covers more ground in the same count.
