Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator
Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement and compare the result with the cut-off points of the expert consultation report credited below.
Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement, in the same unit. An 81 cm waist and 94 cm hips give 0.86. The expert consultation report credited below lists a ratio of 0.90 or more for men, or 0.85 or more for women, as linked to a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications.
This calculator is for general education only. It is not medical advice, a diagnosis or a substitute for a professional assessment. The cut-off points come from the expert consultation report credited below and the report itself calls for cut-offs suited to different populations; they may not fit every person, including children and pregnant people, and the report notes the waist values were given as an example. Measurements taken at different points or with different tape tension change the result. If you have concerns about your weight or health, talk to a doctor or another qualified health professional.
Waist-to-hip ratio
0.86
- Ratio vs the 0.85 cut-off
- At or above the substantially-increased-risk cut-offThe report links this to a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications
- Waist (81.00 cm)
- Above the increased-risk cut-off
The ratio is compared with the cut-off before rounding. A screening measure, not a diagnosis.

About the Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator
The waist-to-hip ratio compares how much of a person's size sits around the middle with the size of the hips. It is a screening number, not a measure of health on its own. The arithmetic is one division: an 81 cm waist over 94 cm hips is 0.86, and a man with a 35 in waist and 40 in hips has 0.88. Both measurements use the same unit, so the ratio is the same in centimeters or inches. Where and how you measure changes the result. The expert consultation report credited below measures the waist at the midpoint between the lowest palpable rib and the top of the hip bone (the iliac crest), and the hips around the widest part of the buttocks, with a tape that does not stretch, standing relaxed, at the end of a normal breath out. Its Table A1 lists a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as linked to a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications. It also lists waist size alone: above 94 cm (men) or 80 cm (women) for increased risk and above 102 cm or 88 cm for substantially increased risk, values the report says were first given as an example, not as formal recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my waist-to-hip ratio?+
Measure your waist and your hips in the same unit and divide the waist by the hips. An 81 cm waist and 94 cm hips give 81 / 94 = 0.86. The calculator does the division and shows the result to two decimals.
What waist-to-hip ratio is high?+
The expert consultation report credited below lists 0.90 or more for men and 0.85 or more for women as linked to a substantially increased risk of metabolic complications. Below those values, the ratio is under the cut-off; the report does not grade it further.
Where exactly do I measure my waist and hips?+
Waist: midway between the lower edge of your last rib and the top of your hip bone, not at the belly button. Hips: around the widest part of the buttocks. Use a tape that does not stretch, keep it level, and measure at the end of a normal breath out.
Is waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI?+
Neither is better in general; they answer different questions. BMI uses weight and height, while the ratio compares your waist with your hips and does not measure body fat directly. Neither number on its own is a diagnosis, and a health professional can put yours in context.
Cut-off points and measurement method: World Health Organization, Waist circumference and waist-hip ratio: report of a WHO expert consultation (Geneva, 8-11 December 2008; published 2011), Table A1 and section 2.5.
