California Paycheck Calculator

Estimate your California take-home pay for 2026: federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, California income tax withholding and SDI, per paycheck and per year.

Last updated: October 14, 2026How this is calculated →

On a $75,000 salary paid every two weeks, single with one California allowance, a 2026 paycheck of $2,884.62 comes to about $2,214.05 take-home. California income tax withholding is $117.39, SDI is a separate $37.50, and the rest goes to federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare.

This is an estimate of paycheck withholding for 2026, not a tax return; it is not financial advice, and not tax advice. Federal income tax is estimated from the annual brackets, not the federal withholding tables, so take-home pay can differ from your pay stub, and married means married filing jointly. California withholding follows the state's exact calculation method on an annual basis, prorated to each paycheck, which can differ by a few cents from an employer's payroll. It leaves out pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) and health premiums, additional withholding, credits, local taxes and other income. Check your pay stub or ask a tax professional about your situation.

Married here means married filing jointly for the federal estimate. Allowances are the regular withholding allowances on your California DE 4 (or W-4 if you never filed a DE 4).

About the California Paycheck Calculator

A California paycheck has two state lines on top of the federal ones. The first is state income tax withholding, figured here by the exact calculation method in the state's 2026 withholding schedules credited below: subtract the standard deduction from your yearly pay, apply the tax rate table for your filing status, subtract a credit for each allowance on your DE 4, and spread the result over your paychecks. On $75,000 single with one allowance, that is $3,052.03 a year, or $117.39 every two weeks. The second line is SDI, state disability insurance, at 1.3% of all wages with no cap, so $975.00 a year on the same salary, or $37.50 a paycheck. Low incomes have no state income tax withheld: $18,000 a year paid monthly falls under the low income exemption, though SDI of $19.50 a month still applies. A married couple on $120,000 paid twice a month with two allowances sees $150.29 of state tax a paycheck and takes home about $3,983.88. The calculator reproduces the schedules' own example: $2,400 twice a month ($57,600 a year), married, four allowances, has $4.13 of California tax withheld.

Frequently asked questions

How much is California income tax withholding on my paycheck?+

It depends on your pay, filing status and DE 4 allowances. Single at $75,000 a year with one allowance, paid every two weeks, has $117.39 withheld each paycheck in 2026.

What is SDI on my California paycheck?+

State disability insurance, withheld at 1.3% of wages in 2026 with no wage limit. On a $2,884.62 paycheck that is $37.50. It funds disability and paid family leave benefits.

Why is no California tax withheld from a small paycheck?+

The withholding schedules start with a low income exemption: if your pay for the period is at or under the table amount, no state income tax is withheld, though SDI still applies. $18,000 a year paid monthly is under it.

Is this my actual California tax bill?+

No. It estimates what is withheld from each paycheck. Your real tax is settled on your return, with credits, deductions and other income this page does not model.
