Inflation Calculator: What Is a Past Dollar Worth Today?

Enter an amount and two dates to see what it is worth in the other year's dollars, using the Consumer Price Index from 1913 to the latest release.

Last updated: October 2, 2026How this is calculated →

To adjust a price for inflation, multiply it by the CPI for the later date and divide by the CPI for the earlier date. The 2000 average CPI-U was 172.2 and the 2024 average was 313.689, so $100 in 2000 buys about what $182.17 bought in 2024. Prices rose 82.17% over those 24 years, an average of 2.53% a year.

This calculator gives an estimate for general education only. It is not financial advice, investment advice or tax advice. It restates amounts by the ratio of published Consumer Price Index values, which reflect average price changes for urban consumers, not the costs of any one household, region or item, and it does not account for interest, investment returns or taxes. Wage, contract and benefit adjustments often use a different index or period, so check the terms that apply to you, and talk to a qualified financial professional before you make decisions based on this figure.

CPI data runs from January 1913 through August 2026. A whole-year average needs all 12 months, so for 2025 and 2026 pick a month.

About the Inflation Calculator

This calculator restates a dollar amount from one date in the dollars of another, using the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), the index most often quoted as the inflation rate. Each index value is the cost of the same broad basket of goods and services, set to 100 for the average of 1982 to 1984, so the ratio of two values is how much prices moved between them. Pick a month for either date, or leave the month on the whole-year average. The year average here is the mean of the 12 monthly values; a year needs all 12, so 2025, which has no October figure, and the current year need a month. Run it backward too: $100 in 2024 dollars was worth about $54.90 in 2000. The result describes an average urban household, so your own costs can rise faster or slower depending on what you spend on, such as rent, health care or fuel.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate inflation between two years?+

Divide the later CPI value by the earlier one and multiply your amount by the result. For 2000 to 2024 that is 313.689 divided by 172.2, so $100 becomes $182.17. Subtract 1 from the ratio and multiply by 100 for the total price change, 82.17% here.

What does the average inflation per year mean?+

It is the steady yearly rate that would produce the same total change. Over 2000 to 2024 prices rose 82.17% in all, which works out to about 2.53% a year compounded. Actual years swing well above and below that figure.

Why can't I pick October 2025?+

No CPI value was published for October 2025, so there is nothing to compare against. Pick September or November instead. The same gap is why 2025 has no whole-year average here.

Does this show how much my own costs went up?+

Not exactly. The CPI-U tracks a basket that stands for spending by urban consumers on average. If most of your budget goes to things that rose faster, such as rent or insurance, your personal inflation was higher than the index shows, and the reverse also happens.

How current is the data?+

The index is released monthly, about two weeks after each month ends. The page shows the last month it holds under the inputs, and the latest month is the default end date.
