Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. A household with $463,500.00 in savings, retirement accounts, investments, a home and a car, and $300,700.00 in mortgage, car, student and card debt, has a net worth of $162,800.00. The debt-to-asset ratio is 64.9%. For families headed by someone aged 35 to 44, the 2022 median net worth was $135,600, so this household sits $27,200.00 above it.

This calculator adds up the figures you enter for general education; it is not financial, tax or investment advice. It does not value your assets, verify your balances, or account for taxes, fees or penalties you would owe on selling assets or withdrawing retirement savings. The comparison is with a 2022 survey median in 2022 dollars, not a recommendation. For decisions about your finances, consult a qualified financial professional.

About the Net Worth Calculator

The Survey of Consumer Finances, the most detailed public survey of American household balance sheets, defines net worth as the difference between a family's assets and its liabilities, and this calculator does exactly that subtraction. List assets at what they would sell for today, not what you paid: a car bought for $35,000 three years ago is worth its resale price, and a house is worth its market value, not the purchase price or the tax assessment. Retirement accounts count at their full balance even though taxes and penalties may apply when you withdraw. Debts are the payoff balances on your latest statements. The comparison uses the survey's 2022 medians by the age of the head of household, published in October 2023 in 2022 dollars: $39,000 under 35, $135,600 at 35 to 44, $247,200 at 45 to 54, $364,500 at 55 to 64, $409,900 at 65 to 74 and $335,600 at 75 or older, with $192,900 for all families. A median is the middle family, not a goal, and the survey counts a family's combined holdings, so a single person comparing alone is comparing with households that may have two earners.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my net worth?+

Add the current value of everything you own: bank accounts, retirement and investment accounts, your home and other property at market value, and vehicles at resale value. Then add every balance you owe. Subtract the second total from the first.

What is a good net worth for my age?+

There is no official target. One reference point is the Survey of Consumer Finances median, which for 2022 ran from $39,000 for families headed by someone under 35 to $409,900 at 65 to 74. Being below the median says little on its own: a large student loan early in a career, or a recent home purchase with a small down payment, pulls the figure down for good reasons.

Should I include my home and my car?+

Yes, at what they would sell for, with their loans entered on the debt side. A home can account for much of the difference between two households' net worth, because its value is usually large, and a car loses value every year, so counting it at today's price keeps the figure honest. Leave out everyday belongings unless they would genuinely sell for a meaningful amount.

Can net worth be negative?+

Yes, when debts are larger than assets. It can happen early in adult life, for example with student loans and few savings. The calculator shows a negative figure with a minus sign, and the debt-to-asset ratio, which passes 100% in that case, falls as balances are paid down or assets grow.

What does the debt-to-asset ratio mean?+

It is total debts divided by total assets. At 64.9%, roughly 65 cents of every dollar you hold is owed to a lender. The ratio is a balance-sheet measure, separate from the debt-to-income ratio lenders use to judge whether your monthly payments fit your pay.
