Income Tax Calculator: 2026 Federal Tax by Bracket
Enter your annual income and filing status to see your 2026 federal income tax, how much falls in each bracket, and your marginal and effective rates.
Subtract the standard deduction, then tax each slice of what is left at its own bracket rate. A single filer earning $75,000 in 2026 subtracts $16,100, leaving $58,900 taxable: $1,240 at 10%, $4,560 at 12% and $1,870 at 22%, for $7,670 in federal income tax. That is a 22% marginal rate but a 10.23% effective rate on the full $75,000.
This calculator gives an estimate for general education only. It is not tax advice, financial advice or a substitute for your tax return. It applies the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction for single and married filing jointly only, and leaves out credits, itemized and other deductions, capital gains rates, payroll taxes and state or local tax. Your actual tax depends on your full return. Check with a qualified tax professional before making decisions.

About the Income Tax Calculator
Federal income tax is progressive, which means each bracket rate applies only to the dollars inside that bracket, never to your whole income. This calculator shows that split for tax year 2026. Start from your income for the year, and it subtracts the standard deduction for your filing status, $16,100 for single filers or $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, then runs what is left through the seven brackets from 10% to 37%. The table lists how many taxable dollars land in each bracket and the tax on them. Two rates come out of it. The marginal rate is the bracket your last dollar reaches, which is what an extra dollar of income would be taxed at. The effective rate is your total tax divided by your income, which is the share you actually pay. If you already know your taxable income from a return, switch the input so no deduction is taken. Credits, itemized deductions, capital gains rates, Social Security and Medicare, and state tax are left out.
Frequently asked questions
Will moving into a higher tax bracket lower my take-home pay?+
No. Only the dollars above the bracket edge are taxed at the higher rate. A single filer whose taxable income rises from $50,400 to $50,500 pays 22% on the extra $100, or $22, and nothing changes on the first $50,400.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?+
The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income. The effective rate is total tax divided by total income. A married couple filing jointly on $150,000 has a 22% marginal rate but pays $15,340, an effective rate of 10.23%.
What are the 2026 federal tax brackets?+
For single filers, 10% up to $12,400 of taxable income, then 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% at higher edges. For married filing jointly, 10% runs to $24,800 and 12% to $100,800, with the same seven rates above. The table on this page shows where your income falls.
Why does my actual tax bill look different?+
Credits such as the child tax credit lower the tax directly, itemized or above-the-line deductions shrink taxable income, and investment income can be taxed at separate rates. This page models wages with the standard deduction only, so treat it as a starting point, not your return.
