VA Disability Calculator
Estimate the combined rating that the VA's combined ratings table gives for your individual ratings, with every step shown.
VA ratings are not added together. Each rating applies to the share of the person the earlier ratings leave, so 60%, 40% and 20% combine to 76%, then 81%, which the 38 CFR 4.25 method converts to 80%. This calculator applies that method to the disability ratings you enter and shows each step.
This calculator estimates a combined rating from ratings you enter, by the method in 38 CFR 4.25, for general education. It is not legal advice, not financial advice and not a VA decision: only the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs assigns disability ratings. It does not apply the bilateral factor, and it says nothing about eligibility, service connection, a claim or any payment. For your own case, contact the VA or an accredited veterans service representative.
Enter each individual rating from your VA decision. The order does not matter; they are combined from the highest down.
Estimated combined rating
80%
Combined value 81%, converted to the nearest 10 (a value ending in 5 goes up).
| Combined so far | Next rating | New combined value |
|---|---|---|
| 60% | 40% | 76% |
| 76% | 20% | 81% |
An estimate by the 38 CFR 4.25 method. It does not apply the bilateral factor, and only the VA decides a rating.

About the VA Disability Calculator
Under 38 CFR 4.25, disability ratings are combined with a table, not by addition: each rating applies to the part of the whole that remains after the ratings above it. Start with the highest rating: a 60% rating leaves 40% of a whole person. A second rating of 40% takes 40% of that remaining 40%, which is 16 points, so the two combine to 76%. A third rating of 20% takes 20% of the remaining 24, close to 5 points, giving 81%. Each step is rounded to a whole number, as the cells of Table I in 38 CFR 4.25 are. Only at the end is the combined value converted to the nearest number divisible by 10, with a value ending in 5 moved up: 81 becomes 80, and the regulation's own example of 50% and 30%, which combine to 65%, becomes 70%. Ten ratings of 10% combine to only 65%, then 70%, far short of 100. The calculator does not apply the bilateral factor.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my combined rating lower than my ratings added up?+
Because each rating applies to what is left after the ones above it. Two 50% ratings do not make 100%: the second takes half of the remaining 50, so they combine to 75%, which converts to 80%.
What is the bilateral factor?+
It is a separate step in the VA's rating rules, outside the combined ratings table this calculator follows. This calculator does not apply it, so it does not include that step; ask the VA how it applies to your disability ratings.
Can a combined rating reach 100%?+
A single 100% rating is 100% on its own. Combining alone reaches 100% only when the combined value is 95% or more, which converts upward. Three ratings of 90% combine to 100%.
Does the order I enter the ratings in matter?+
No. The regulation arranges disabilities from the greatest to the least before combining them, and the calculator does the same, whatever order you type them in.
The combined ratings method, its rounding to the nearest number divisible by 10 with values ending in 5 adjusted upward, and the 50 and 30, 40 and 20, and 60, 40 and 20 examples: 38 CFR 4.25, Combined ratings table (GovInfo, Code of Federal Regulations, 2024).
